NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Many of you drive past the Jaco Pastorius Park Community Center each day and see those big white walls. We have exciting plans for those walls. Read on!

The board of directors of Oakland Park Main Street is currently working with two artists in our final selection of concepts for the two "awaiting" walls, measuring 19’ tall by 140’ wide.

Once the board has selected the artist and gained City of Oakland Park Commission approval, the painting process will begin.

Watch for future issues where we will unveil the final concept. And don't forget, approximately four feet of personalized engraved bricks will sit underneath both walls of the mural. Won't you consider purchasing a brick in honor of someone you know? Will your company support our cause with the purchase of a brick?

Bricks can be purchased directly on line at: www.JacoPastoriusPark.com/jaco_bricks.html

For further information, check out our web site at www.oaklandparkmainstreet.com or email me directly at mark@smark.com. Oakland Park Main Street is "at the heart of it all".

Main Street holds its First Annual Classic Car Show & Swap Meet on Sunday, February 28 in downtown Oakland Park from 11 am - 4 pm. SAVE THE DATE!

If you or a friend own a classic car (German brand), we invite you to participate in this exciting event. Cars must be model years before 2000 and German brand only this time around (VW, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Audi and others). We hope to expand this show to include domestic and foreign cars in the future. Six categories will include model years: before 1950, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Cars will be judged based on AACA (American Antique Car Association) standards.

Sponsorship opportunities exist at various levels. We are also looking for Swap Meet/used parts vendors as well as new parts vendors to do business at the show. For details call 954-565-2627, or download a registration form from our web site www.oaklandparkmainstreet.com.

Main Street gains two new board members

Steve McAleer is a Realtor with Weichert Realtors Distinctive Homes and resides in the Corals of Oakland Park. Steve has been a dedicated, enthusiastic and resourceful Oktoberfest 2009 committee member and will now fill the board seat vacated by Richard Vilissov as Promotion Chair. Steve's entertainment background, event management and entrepreneurial experience lend themselves perfectly to the tasks and challenges that lie ahead.

Bill Savarese, a local artist, is our new Public Art Chair. He has worked abroad for many years and has co-founded Wall Street Art, a grassroots group of artists engaged by the European Union to beautify Copenhagen, the cultural capital in Europe in 1996, by painting murals and creating sculptures throughout the city. He now lives with his family in Poinsettia Heights. We are excited to have such an accomplished artist work with us to develop themed mural art for downtown and other projects.

Holiday Home Tour Cancelled

We very much regret that the holiday home tour planned for Saturday, December 12 was cancelled. We know those of you who participated last year have been looking forward to this event with anticipation. We hope to bring it back next year.
